I like your idea of including health care cost in the stimulus plan and it would certainly be a boon to employers and the American people alike. How to pay for it? I say that repealing the tax cuts for the wealthiest 10% would go a long way. The next step is to eliminate all corporate welfare for oil companies. They have plenty of money to search for oil on their own! Thirdly, change the tax rules on corporate earnings to be a graduated scale based on what percentage of their workforce is overseas (including subcontracting). If companies have to pay higher taxes for overseas operations maybe they will have more incentive to hire more Americans.

Wow-- I hope you get some props from Obama when his YouTube channel goes up.
I enjoyed reading about your second idea about education very much (having heard about your first idea previously). I wonder if he could "sell" it as part of investing in our "infrastructure", and use the current economic crisis to push thru something like this. That is, despite the initial costs, it could be sold a a jobs program for the short term which will pay off in the long term in the form of a better education system. It seems to me that it's easier to initiate big new programs in economic climates like the one we are now in. Maybe a program like yours could be wrapped into his idea for a new "Dept. of Urban Policy". (http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2008/11/12/president_of_the_united_cities)

I know it's been said by others, but damn, it will be nice to have a president that gets the importance of supporting our urban centers (hopefully).

Thanks, Dan. Check out this quote from an AP article out today about how Obama plans to use the internet in new ways as president: "He can do a half-hour YouTube address every Saturday, addressing millions," [Democratic strategist, Joe] Trippi said. "The networks would never give the president that much television time each week, but the press is still going to have to cover what he says on YouTube." Great minds think alike, I guess. Or perhaps Obama was inspired the first time I sent him this suggestion back in July ;)

That's a great letter. I was very interested to hear your suggestions for local involvement in schools, etc. That's a critical step that I can only assume is lacking in our current approach. Remind to talk to you about a book called "Respect in a world of inequality" sometime.

Here's my prediction for 4pm tomorrwo, when the first polls close on these states:
Indiana- stays too close to call for an hour...
Georgia- ditto
Virginia- is called in 15 min. for Obama
Kentucky- is called for McC in 1-5 min.

Which is all great news. If they are able to call IN for Obama in the first hr., before other polls close, will the networks "declare" it?

An interesting quote that I found on WWW.MSNBC.COM showing which groups Obama and McCain are winning.

"Looking inside the numbers, Obama leads McCain among African Americans (90 percent to 3 percent), Latinos (68 to 27), 18- to 34-year-olds (59 to 38), independents (48 to 38), blue-collar voters (51 to 44), suburban voters (49 to 44) and Catholics (49 to 46).

McCain, meanwhile, has the advantage among evangelicals (78 percent to 19 percent), those 65 years old and older (53 to 40), white men (54 to 42) and white women (48 to 47)."

Although the Black, Latino and youth votes are not that unexpected, I think that the blue collar, suburban, Catholic vote and the near tie among white women for Obama are noteworthy. My final impression is that Democrats are building an electoral base consisting of young voters, African Americans, and Latinos (the fastest growing demographic in the US) on top of our historical urban and liberal base.

The republican coalition is based on old people (a group which by definition will not form a LASTING group of voters), and white evangelicals (a shrinking population as well).

These numbers make me think that the Republican's need a major realignment to win nationally in the future.
They will need to:
1. Reach out to Latinos. Immigrant bashing is not a wining strategy.
2. Reach out to Catholics: Need to start addressing social justice issues, not just evangelical family values.
3. Reach out to middle class suburban voters: Economic policies must be geared towards growth of the middle class. Trickle down will no longer sell.
4. Reach out to youth. Not sure how they can reach this group ....Any particular concerns that are specific to the young? Economic insecurity related to outsourcing of jobs?
